2011 was definitely a very unforgettable year for me. A lot of things happened.

A very good friend suddenly passed away when I was on a work trip in Hong Kong.
I got engaged.
I injured my drawing arm (wrist, specific) that I can't really use my hand......

Downsizing from Townhouse to a condo (man, it took us long time to find this condo), moving and packing was very difficult when I got my right hand injured...

Held my first Art Exhibition in Oct, and Dawna Friesen from Global national happened to be filming in Markham Unionville, and I was on their website (click here) haha. ^O^

A second Art Exhibition in Nov.
I played a Easter Music to remember Jesus' sacrifice and resurrection.
My little brother got married. My parents came to Toronto to visit us.
Got to work on special series for Easter and Jesus' miracle at work.

and so much more...

First Ever Art Exhibition in Oct, 2011

It all began with a chat with an aunt.

I met Aunt Gellien from work. We have known each other for quite awhile, lately, she realized that I am an artist too. I show her my work and suddenly, she said, "Why don't you join me to do the Art Exhibition this year?" Aunt Gellien is a landscape artist, I heard from coworkers that she holds her own exhibition every year, I never knew she would invite me to hold an Art Exhibition with me.

Honestly, I don't think I am ready, but I have to try. My expectation was not to sell or to get famous from this first exhibition, but to hear critique and comments from others, sometimes, Artist can't just live in their own cave and think how good they are.

So ya, because of this exhibition, I began to force myself to keep painting, keep doodling whenever I have time, keep going to life drawing to improve my skills. It feels like going back to school haha.

Anyways, here are the drawing and life drawing I did recently, enjoy~!

Resurrection

2 months ago, I was suffering from a hand injury (my right hand, my drawing hand). This injury was not caused by any accident or anything as most people suspected. The medical name is called De Quervain's tendinitis (click here if u're interested in detail)

My doctor said it was result from overuse of my muscle and i was "injured" for many years. When I look back... I did have frequent pain in the right thumb area. Sadly, because of this, I couldn't really draw or write with my right hand for a long 2-month period.

So these doodles means a lot to me. =)

This time, my practice was Alexander McQueen, a famous fashion design who just passed away.

I don't know him that much, I only read his article through a magazine. But I love to understand his life and his works.

Though this portrait doesn't have a strong resemblance of his face, I am happy that my control and confidence over colour is getting stronger, even though I paused my painting lessons over a month due to a business trip.

Here is the work in progress, this portrait will be finished by next class =)

This is the first time I come back to paint digitally after taking lesson from my teacher.

i think somehow my colour has improved a bit, and I think I paint better with photoshop than real canvas >.<.

The following sketches were just drawn at a Starbucks after work. (Well technically, it's just a dinner break, coz i had to come back to office to finish my editing work >.< deadline is this Friday... and I only had 5 days in total to finish the whole online editing >.<)

Some of you might know that I no longer work in the animation field (I became a video editor and production assistance for about a month and a half).

During this time, I kept asking myself if I am "quitting animation"? Honestly, I do not have the answer yet, but my dad once said, "if it (he meant animation, movie and etc) is in your heart, even though you don't get there at this moment, eventually you'll go back that path."

This is a good time to ask what I want to achieve in my life. Is it animation? Is it movie? or something else? I do not know. So before I found my "life goal", I'll keep learning. Right now, I love my job being a video editor, and due to my lack of formal training, I begin to see what I need is not just the technical skills in editing, but also the "art sense". So, once my job are more stable, I'll take some fine art course or painting course. Hehe... then I can claim to be a real artist~! haha ^O^

Ever since I got my current job as a video editor as SOBEM, a Christian charity organization that produces TV show (our show is being broadcast in different countries), it feels that I lose all links to animation, maya, houdini or anything 3D.

There were times I tried to sit down and draw something, but my mind is blank, I have no idea what to create.

This painting is done by a nintendo DS program called Colors!

I've heard of this program in DS for quite awhile, but I never try it coz first, i don't have a DS and ... i kept telling myself i have no time for painting and such and such.

Recently, my brother bought his new toy PSP and asked if I wanna play his DS, i'm like, sure, why not =D so, i remember this program and try it. haha, but wow, once i tried it, i get addicted instantly!! coz i can do painting anywhere, on the subway (and secretly at work =P haha but not so secretly coz my friend saw me painting at work =P haha) Also, if you're in a wi-fi available area, you can send ur drawing to ur email, how cool is that!!

but ya, i'm amazed by the simplicity yet efficient function of this program, and the only complain i have is that, the resolution of the picture is a bit too low.

anyways, i'm happy enough ;)

Lately, still struggling with job searching. Honestly, it's getting frustrating and discouraging, yet, life is never smooth and a bumpy life is a gift of God, the gift of motivation.

To make a living, I'll begin to apply to any job. As my dad always taught me, if I have passion in this field, even though I am not able to step a foot in this industry at this moment, eventually, I'll get there. That's my belief.

i'm happy with the hair, and the lighting on the arms. but the face...um >.< my friends said she looks like a guy before...so i try to push the make up and make her look more feminine. um, one little breakthrough for myself: I never try to paint or draw the sophisticated pattern on costume before, so, i try to push myself a little more this time. hope u like it. ;)

Last night while I was staying late to do more work, a friend came in and taught me sth about texturing. A short while after he's done, he suddenly asked me," Why didn't u do animation for your demo? I remember your last year final animation was wicked..."

At that moment, my heart sunk a bit. Then I told him this and that blab blab blab...

In short, he looked at me and told me how his company/ director encourage him to expand his skills... so I should keep doing animation in the future and don't let the technology hinder me from being a great animator. To be honest, at that moment I don't dare saying too much words (well...i don't normally have much words when speaking in English =P haha) because I knew my eyes are going to be watery if i say more. I don't mind crying, but not in school =P

I really appreciate to have friends who had seen me working hard and struggle and still believe in me. I may not know if i'd become a great animator as they said, but I have no reason to give up on it.

I had a dream last night. In the dream, i was watching a classical animation film. Suddenly, someone out of no where asked me, "What do u want to do?" Without any hesitation, I replied, "I want to do this (classical animation)."

My answer surprised me. A good friend said that was my "Self"(true self?) asking my "Ego" (conscious self?)

During X'mas 06, I decided I don't have what it takes to be a good animator and chose lighting coz I thought my knowledge from traditional medium would help me succeed in lighting and texturing. In last 2 months, I know I'm doing fine in modeling, texturing and lighting. However, no matter how hard I try, I don't seem to have great passion in what I'm doing right now. My motivation becomes thinner everyday, yet my fear in career became bigger and bigger.

This dream made me realize the pain that has been growing inside me from the moment I decided to give up animation.

I'm not saying I'm crazily in love with animation or whatever... but all I know is I lost the direction of my career, and, sadly, all the effort and all the all-nighters I had in last 2 and a half year seem to be a waste... I remember I worked my butt off just because I realize my skills could not compare with people from Sheridan. I remember the first night I had my heart problem because of excessive intake of coffee and lack of sleep. I remember the first time I received positive comment from my animation teachers and friends...

And now I feel that I am forcing myself to become a lighting artist within these 4 months since I've spent all my energy to adapt animating with Maya and I need a job after I graduate...

And, once I'm not an animators, school seems irrelevant to me, it's like we non-animators are forsaken all in a sudden, all the supports and guidance seems to be gone. It feels weird when someone asked what I'm doing recently, and it feels weirder when they learnt I'm not doing animation in this animation program.

AAC used to be a second home I loved to stay, and now it's just another work place I have to go everyday.

yay, i worked so efficiently in school today. so my reward is to go home a bit early and do some practice painting. This time, i try different colour tone, different mood. The harest part of this painting is the yellowish orange sunglasses, hard to put orange and yellow without making her eyes yellow =D so i painted them in separate layers and use "multiply" and it works!! hehe so happy =P

Anyways, my sister said she feels like the boy from "Grudge"... LOL

It may sound cheesy to say this, I'm starting to miss everyone the moment i left school for X'mas break, really! I did dream of aac ppl this morning. I can't believe that, in about 4 months, we'll go on to different journeys.

Personally, taking animation at AAC feels more like joining a family than simply going to school. We work hard, play hard, laugh, sometimes get frustrated and exhausted together. There are lots of love, support and encouragement among us, like we are a team of brothers fighting the same battle (...well...not just in COD or Streetfighter =P). I enjoy every coffee breaks down to Timmy's or the "trip" York Lane for food. It is great that none of us see each other as enemy even though in reality we'll be competing each other for jobs.

(dont' know how to end this...so i just end it like this =P)

Animating with Maya? i feel more confident after doing the lip sync. Seriously, my animation skill was improved too. it does feeling like I've gone through a tunnel and waiting for the next challenge to come (yes, it has arrived and its name is "box lifting" haha) anyways, everything "feels" better, i have more confident with modeling and lighting. 5 more months, i have to learn more ^-^

a sketch i did last night, i was watching "Heroes" and drew from it. (this show is interesting...it left me lots of questions...some doesn't really make sense but i'm too curious to watch the next episode ^-^)

as some of u might know, i'll be quitting my teaching job after December, and finally i told 2 of my classes about this news... To my surprise, one parent came to me and asked," Alex, are you really quitting?" i said, "ya, because i'm graduating.." Then she said," I see...No wonder Billy's (my gr 5 student) eyes turn red when he told me you are leaving...I think he really likes you."

I can't explain how hard it is to say goodbye to my loving students, to me, i feel like a father to them more than just a teacher (even though some of them are REALLY not so nice....) but well, everyone has their own path to go, right?

this semester, i really don't think i worked hard at all. It's mid Nov, I looked back and i dont' see any good work is done by this semester at all. i suck at animating with maya, i suck at rigging, i suck at lighting, i'm not as good in modeling, what am i doing here? I can't even animate this simple walk cycle, and i don't know what to do with my lip sync, i'm stuck...

can i really create some good work for my demo reel by april? can i really go to pixar 5 yrs later as i planned?

This week is supposed to be my study break/ reading week, or whatever u call it. but well, i signed up for ToonBoom workshop. so i still have to wake up early and work...well, have i ever taken any rest during school time? haha, no... A workaholic always fill up his schedule...

Anyway, the movie of Eragon is coming in Dec, and i did this painting during the workshop today, haha...it's fun to paint while u're learning something =P lucky that in the maya lab, my monitor is facing the teacher, or i'll have a big trouble concentrating haha.

....and man, i love painting more than animating so far...maybe it's just the transition period before i'm fluent with Maya... I hope i can handle Maya like how I handle 2D animation last year, some of u might know that I couldnt' even finish the side step animation in first year haha.

lately, i'm kind of addicted to Open Canvas =D i love it because it gives me the 1/2 photoshop and 1/2 painter feeling, and the program is small but powerful enough to produce nice painting =D

I've been painting for a leadership training camp (called "I-connect")held by a Chinese Canadian youth organization called Across U-hub (i.e. "youth" "hub", click to check out their website). The theme program of the camp is in RPG format, so they asked me to do some paintings for making a limited animation by using camera movement.

I have to admit that lots of the building design are rip-offs from Star Wars haha =D but well, other than that, i've been trying new stuff and getting better with painting. Origianally, I was trying to imitate Ryan Church's style, however... it wasn't sucessful =P

1) i-city: it's a high-tech city full of high rise and stuff. and because ppl in there rely too much on technology, they ignored the environment. Consequently, there are mogs around their high rise. What I like about this one is the sky, and the orange highlight i used on these building.

What I dont' like about this one is the design of the building...lack of creative and they look crappy actually. But hey, i put the CN Tower-look-alike in this painting. =D
2) it's just the plane flying toward i-city. um...I'm not too happy with the purple-pink clouds...
3)the plane crashed before they landed i-city. i like the smokes, the wreck, and the details of the forest (u can't see with this resolution). I'm not so sure about the sky...it looks weird, doesn't it?

July 16th: It's finally done!!! --------------------
Lately, i start reading Bleach the manga again, and it inspired me to drew this =D I haven't drawn in anime style for awhile.

And this time, the difficulty is to paint ice, because this character's power ice. When he uses his Bankei, the ultimate power, there's ice around his sword and two ice wings formed on his back so he can fly.

Also, I want to make this painting looks windy and cold. Don't really know how yet, but i'll try to figure out.

July 6th: today i worked a little more on this piece =D---
I haven't done much art work lately, because of the in class essay i have on Wednesday night and some family stuff i have to take care. but well, tonight is like a short break from all these. I went to watch Xmen 3 (yes again!!) with my mom, she didn't understand much but she was really excited about the movie =D

tonight, i tried something different with CG. Normally, i draw on paper first, scan it, do some photoshop and paint it. But this time, i drew directly with my tablet, and explore different way to paint, and these are what i have so far. =D Please feel free to critique, I'm still an ameteur in digital painting.
the skin colour on one above looks pretty dead... so i was thinking: why not make the shadow more colourful, how about more redish?? =D and he looks more healthy and alive now. Also, i tried to use purple for the "lighter shadow" (i don't know the proper names =P hehe) on the face and they turn out fine.

It's shameful to say that I havent' watched the priate of the carribbean yet... i guess i better watch it before the 2nd one come out!! ^O^

Lately, there're many things made me wanna get better in art. First, a good friend of mine tried to introduce me to a job, but then, i missed the opportunity... =( ... and then, i saw Andrew Hou's work. I always knew he is as good as Arnold Tsang, but man, when i looked at his stuff and found that he's actually at my age, I have an urge to get better and better. anyways, i coloured Sir Normus, hope i'm getting better with colouring and get closer to those amazing artists.

Life Drawing

Since summer started, i'm trying to go to life drawing as much as I can. and lately, i strongly feel that I need a breakthrough coz i've drawing the same way over and over again, i know i'm lacking something in my life drawing, but i don't know what it is. and i'm drawing slower and slower. it gets frusting when there's a good model, good poses, and then i ruined it with crappy lines and horrible proportion. what can i do? or i just keep going to extra life and wait to get better? ......(-_-).......

and lately, i'm starting to do some acrylic painting...and tonight, i'm wondering if i should spend more time on computer painting? working on CG maybe leading me to a path that's closer to animation... but, working with traditional medium maybe a good option to strength my artistics skill, they are like the "foundation" of art... or, maybe i should do both during this summer? maybe i should...

Jackblack model sheet, in this project, we had to pick a celebrity and design a character based on him in a caricature style, and I chose Jack Black. I remember I rent "The School of rock" and "Envy" for reference, man, he's just fun to draw!!! ------------

more drawings on Oog and Sir Normus. Due to the strike, we didn't get to animate our last animation, what we had to do was just to design characters and hand in the key drawings. And as some of u might know, i designed these 2 character based on the game Warcraft haha =D at first i love Oog better coz it looks more like warcraft-ish, but then, I begin to love Sir Normus more and more as I was developing the key drawings, his personality is just hilarious!!

Wolverine

Normally, while talking on the phone, I'd love to find something to draw. I found it interesting when I'm not focusing on making good drawings, they'd end up looking alright. And tonight my subconsious drove me to pick up my X2 Art book and drew a wolverine from it.

I don't know it's my monitor or my scanner, whenever I scanned in my drawings, they lost some contrast...but I refuse to fix it with photoshop... Somehow, using too much photoshop makes me feel that the drawing is "fake" =P

Oh, by the way, I love X3 (even there are some negative comments about it. )

Lately, didn't have much time to draw, i've been occupied by some volunteer work at a youth ministry called Across , the work from the English course I'm taking (I have to re-read Harry Potter...I read slow @_@), and many convocations to attend. Plus previously, making the Rubik's Cube and shooting the old animation took most of my time, plus time with family, work and etc... I wish I have more time to just sit down and draw or paint.

Rubik's Cube

"Rubik's Cube" is really my baby because it really means a lot tome. To me, this project is the proof of my hard work and dedication to animation. I remember on the last day of first semester, I thought of quiting animation because it was really frustrating that, no matter how hard I tried, I just didn't seem to understand animation at all. I had no clue.

But fortunately, during the last 2 years, I had these amazing friends (mostly from "Street Fighter Class" ^-^). They helped me whenever I was stuck. Also, they inspired me to improve!!

Talking aboutRubik's Cube, thanks to the excellent voice acting by Bryan Murdoch and Dave Dind, it is a fun piece to work on. I still laugh everytime I see this clip =P Anyways, I'm really lucky to have so much support in my last year, hope u enjoy this clip ^-^

(apology: I know, the quality is bad and the file is big...but I don't know how to keep it small and maintain the quality...)

As some of u might know, i'm taking a course named "The world of Harry Potter". today, we were watching the 1st movie, and because i just re-watch the movie recently, it was a little boring in class, so i did some sketches. And later tonight, i felt like continue working on the girl drawing. The more i render, the less it looks like who she's supposed to be...oh well...

I spent almost the whole day on doing painting and drawing while watching Harry Potter and other movies. Sometimes I just feel lucky to be an artist, if u are hard working, what u do is to draw or paint all days. Doing what u like is a privilege.

Anyways, while I was talking on msn with a good friend, I was drawing this. Sometimes, there's voice telling me to go straight to CG or go learn Maya now. However, another stronger voice tells me to strengthen my traditional skills like drawing with pencil and stuff. so I did this. I don't think I can finish it...Usually, if I can't finish it in 1 day, I lose the interest and patient to finish it the other day...bad Alex...

Tonight, I tried to imagine how Gavin and Phil draw and imitate their style, but turn out it looked nothing like their styles. LOL

and I drew so slow, couldn't finish to draw the hands and feet, lost in proportion. Generally didn't draw too well...so, I throwed out most of my drawings to the recycle bin. And these are the better ones.

I recently made a maquette of my newly designed character, Boston PS. He's a pencil sharpener who is always angry at pencils because they left so much trash in his mouth. However, pencil is his diet, so he's suffering from eating disorder LOL!!
